What is a Self Assessment Tax Return?

Self Assessment is the system HMRC uses to collect tax that has not already been deducted automatically from income. If all your income is taxed through PAYE, you may not need to complete a tax return.

However, a return may be required when you receive income or gains from other sources, including self-employment, property, investments or overseas assets.

A tax return reports your taxable income, gains, allowances and reliefs for a particular tax year. The information is used to calculate:

  • How much Income Tax you must pay

  • Whether Capital Gains Tax is due

  • Any National Insurance contributions payable

  • Payments on account towards the following tax year

  • Whether you have overpaid tax and may be due a refund

HMRC will normally require an online tax return to be submitted by 31 January following the end of the relevant tax year. Any balancing payment will usually be due on the same date.

Filing earlier gives you more time to understand the amount due, plan for the payment and resolve any missing information before the deadline.

Who may need to complete a tax return?

You may need to submit a Self Assessment tax return if, during the tax year, you:

  • Worked for yourself as a sole trader

  • Were a partner in a business partnership

  • Received rental income from UK or overseas property

  • Received dividends, savings interest or investment income that must be reported

  • Sold property, shares, investments or other assets and made a taxable gain

  • Received foreign income or held overseas interests

  • Were UK resident but had income arising outside the UK

  • Were non-UK resident but received taxable UK income

  • Received income that was not taxed through PAYE

  • Need to pay the High Income Child Benefit Charge

  • Want to claim certain tax reliefs or allowable losses

  • Were asked by HMRC to submit a return

The precise requirements depend on your individual circumstances and the tax year concerned.

If HMRC has issued you with a notice requiring a tax return, you should not ignore it, even if you believe you have no tax to pay. HMRC must normally agree that the return is no longer required.
